MAP Exhibit Special Content: Hozhonahaslii: Stories of Healing the Soul Wound

150 150 Boston Palestine Film Festival

Hozhonahaslii: Stories of Healing the Soul Wound is a 45-minute film by Donna Schindler that is a special film component of The Map is Not the Territory art exhibit. It’s available to view in five parts. You can view it here.

Hundreds of years of genocide and forced assimilation into a dominant society have left a scar on Native people throughout the world, which some elders refer to as “the soul wound.” The unhealed traumas of the past are handed down from generation to generation, resulting in extremely high rates of domestic violence, substance abuse, diabetes, and depression.

Hozhonahaslii: Stories of Healing the Soul Wound was made as part of a healing process that is going on in the Navajo Nation and many other parts of the world. Filmed in Northern Arizona on the Navajo Nation in the year 2000, it comprises personal testimonies, memories, and reflections of the Diné (Navajo), which are interwoven with commentaries by Dr. Eduardo Duran, internationally acclaimed Native American psychologist, who has done groundbreaking work in the area of post-colonial healing for many years.
