The Boston Palestine Film Festival is proud to present three gifted, worldclass Palestinian musicians who will perform at our Opening Night After Party at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston:
Tareq Rantisi, percussionist, was born in Jerusalem. He received an Al-Qattan Foundation Music Scholarship to attend Berklee College of Music, graduating with highest honors with a degree in Percussion Performance in 2012.
Since arriving in the US in 2008, Rantisi has performed with some of the biggest names in modern music, including Jack deJohnette, Steve Smith, Paul Winter, Simon Shaheen, Aaron Goldberg, Srinivas Krishnan, Victor Mendoza, Husnu Senlendi Rici, Eguie Castrillo, Bertram Lehmann, Billy Drewes, Basam Saba, Mehmet Ali Sanlikol, Daniel Schnyder Bruno Råberg, Javier Limón, Pepe de Lucía, Glen Velez, Rima Khcheich, Ali Abdul Sattar, Sonia Mbarek, Charbel Rouhana and many other virtuosic musicians, composers, and groups.
Alongside his musical performing career, Tareq has developed a body of educational work, offering master classes, workshops, and private lessons throughout the world in collaboration with Boston College, Brandeis University, The Center for Arabic Culture, NAFDA, The Arabic Music Retreat, The Gaza Music School, Qattan Foundation, and more.
Naseem Alatrash, cellist, is dedicated to representing Arabic culture to the world audiences. His performance on cello is creative, untraditional and unique. After studying at The Edward Said National Conservatory of Music in Palestine, Alatrash was awarded a full presidential scholarship to attend Berklee College of Music. He went on to achieve the highest honors for BMus in cello performance. He also received his Master’s degree in Cello performance at the Global Jazz Institute at Berklee.
A soloist, recording musician, chamber musician, composer and teacher, Alatrash has been featured at The Dominican Republic Jazz Festival, Abu Dhabi Music Festival, Lebanon’s Zouk Mikael International Festival, The Nancy Jazz Festival, Lebanon’s Beit Aldeen Festival, Jerash Festival, The Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center, Lincoln Theater, Wigmore Hall, and within the Aldeburgh World Orchestra’s London Olympic tour appearing at The BBC Proms in The Royal Albert Hall and at Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw.
Among others, Alastrash has performed alongside Ron Carter, Roger Waters, Terri Lyne Carrington, Eugene Friesen, G.E. Smith, Kenny Aronoff, Rami Jaffe, Luis Conte, Simon Shaheen, Javier Limon, Cafe De Silva, Lalah Hathaway, Jorge Drexler and for Alejandro Sanz at the Latin Grammy Awards in 2013, Bassam Saba, Charbel Rouhana. Twice awarded “string player of the year” from The National Music Competition of Palestine, Alatrash continues to be a voice for Palestinian culture and advocate of its music through his global string quartet, The Four Corners Quartet. His goal is to bring Arabic cello performance to world stage and increase the importance and the role of cello in Arabic music.
Tony Barhoum is a qanun player born in 1993 in the Northern Galilee. He began studied the qanun for 10 years at Beit Al-Musica Conservatory. Barhoum has concentrated on studying the Arabic Traditional Music, the Maqamat (Arabic modes) and the art of traditional improvisation on the qanun.
During his studies, Tony received three full scholarships and won first place in three different competitions: The Marcel Khalife National Music Competition, The Palestine National Music Competition in Ramallah, and the Nazareth Music Competition.
In 2014, Barhoum moved to Boston to study at the Berklee College of Music after receiving the Presidential Scholarship. He is currently a Performance Major at Berklee, studying under the Arabic music master and teacher, Simon Shaheen, and will graduate in 2018.
