SUMMARY
He was a bird in love with a fish, separating
them was the thin line of water, which they
broke together for just one kiss. This is their
brief story. Between one kiss and another their
life took its course; in the sea lived a fish and in
the sky lived a bird
~The Fish and the Bird, Hasan Hourani (1974-2003)
My Love Awaits Me by the Sea is a poetic documentary narrating the story of the director Mais Darwazah, who takes a first-time journey back to her homeland, Palestine. She leaves a secluded reality and follows a lover whom she has never met—Hasan, a deceased Palestinian artist and poet, who unveils a beautiful and utopian world to her. Hasan drowned tragically in the sea of Jaffa (which Palestinians refer to as “The Bride of the Sea”), trying to save his young nephew in 2003. But his work remained, and powerfully captured Darwazeh’s imagination and heart.
In his book, Hasan is Everywhere, Hourani reinvents himself as a boy living in the sky and underwater, talking to a sad dinosaur and falling in love with a fish. Using his example of touching escapism, Darwazah lyrically explores the reality that tethers millions of Palestinians and the dreams that set them free.
